The World Pumpkin Confederation
That's really a thing! Help us become a part of the larger world of giant pumpkin weight guessing contests and vote today in our contest :) In all honesty, we're not overly worried about becoming an official member of the World Pumpkin Confederation, but we sure would love for you to enter our contest...
Did we mention the prize? The guess that comes closest to the actual weight of our pumpkin (pictured above, at right) will win a free night's stay at the Pemberton Valley Lodge.
Again: »» Go to Guess the Weight of the Pemberton Valley Lodge Pumpkin Contest on Facebook and "Guess the Weight" of the pumpkin pictured in our lobby.
For us at the Pemberton Valley Lodge, this annual tradition brings us just a bit closer to what fall means to Pemberton. It's harvest time, after all, the time of year when all our working farmers have finished the mad rush of harvest and can take a short breather before it all begins again. It's a time of quiet, of reflection, of thankfulness for nature's bounty.
Our simple (but fun!) annual pumpkin contest is a nod to this farming heritage in Pemberton. It's a reminder to be thankful for our bounty here, the natural splendour we call home. By holding this annual contest, we hope to bring back a little old fashioned harvest time tradition to all our overly busy lives. We hope to see you in our lobby soon to guess the weight of our pumpkin, and just say hello.
Hints and Tips to Guessing the Weight of our Pumpkin
In lots of places across the United States and Canada, pumpkin growing, weighing and weight guessing is serious business. We think a free night's stay at the Pemberton Valley Lodge is a great prize (and we hope you agree!) but in 1996, $53,000 (USD) was paid out to Paula and Nathan Zehr for their pumpkin weighing over 1,000 pounds. The race began in earnest then for the one-ton pumpkin, and in 2011, farmers were really closing in on that elusive goal. Last year, in 2014, a world's record 2,000+ pound pumpkin was grown in Napa Valley and entered into a contest in Half Moon Bay. The prize money was $13,000 with the pumpkin being flown (how?) to New York to be part of a botanical garden.
Growing a large pumpkin is one part of the equation, but guessing the weight is the other. And it is just as serious for some folk. This is where serious math comes into play, so get out your calculators and quell your inner math critic. Here are the exact instructions on how to guess the weight of a pumpkin. Follow the instruction on that page, and you really can't go wrong. We wish you the best of luck and hope to see you soon in our lobby!
