Playing in the Pemberton Backcountry
Wow - Skiing Pencil Chutes on Mount Currie
Way back in 2010, Doglotion went to Mount Currie and skied some pencil chutes. What a great way to highlight what Pemberton has to offer.
The view of the Pemberton Valley seen from Mount Currie is phenomenal. That alone is enough. The fact is, though, Pemberton backcountry is so much more than a pretty backdrop. We're one of the few places in British Columbia with the designation "Gateway to the Backcountry" for a reason.
Pemberton Backcountry Skiing
Backcountry skiing areas start from Pemberton and branches off from here. Off the Duffey Lake Road, about 40 minutes north of Pemberton are some of the most amazing tours you'll ever take. A couple to note include the Marriot Basin and Cerise Creek. Both of these tours include alpine huts, which is one of the best features of the British Columbia backcountry.
A couple of the huts in this area include the Wendy Thompson hut in the Marriott Basin and Keith's Hut, located in the Cerise Creek area. Incredible views of Mount Matier can be seen from the Keith's Hut. Mount Matier is a popular area with mountaineers. Other alpine huts include the Brian Waddington Hut, North Creek Hut and Whitecap Alpine Lodge.
Pemberton Ice Cap
The Pemberton Ice Cap offers enough space for everyone to enjoy the backcountry. It's famous with snowmobilers, but also offers unparalleled views and terrain for skiers.
And of course, you can always combine the two sports: Try sled skiing or sled snowboarding to really take advantage of Pemberton backcountry.
Rise Above the Valley Mist...
The Pemberton Valley offers a lovely, inviting space for outdoor enthusiasts. The weather is often quite a bit warmer than you'll find on your backcountry adventures, making it a perfect place for pre and post adventures. The gorgeous mist that rises from the fields in Pemberton Meadows offers a lovely backdrop to all the relaxing and regrouping you'll need to do upon your return from the backcountry, for example.
Yes, I'm imagining a hot tub scene. It's close to perfect, actually.
Snowshoe or Cross-Country Ski
If you're still into outdoor experiences but perhaps like to go at a slightly slower pace, Pemberton offers lots of places for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing, too. Nairn Falls, Joffre Lake, Cayoosh Creek and the Pemberton Meadows area are all easily accessible and lovely spaces for an outing.
If you are interested in moderate to difficult full-day trips, check out the trails off of Duffy Lake road, which include the Cayoosh Creek, Joffre Lakes as well as the Marriot Basin trails.
The shorter trails that are quite a bit easier and good for all fitness levels include the Nairn Falls, Pemberton Meadows as well as the Shadow Lakes trails.
