The Lillooet Lake Rodeo may seem like any other rodeo, but as an official Western Indian Rodeo and Event Association (WIREA) event, it has a few notable characteristics. The WIREA beginnings start back in the 1950s when the first Native rodeo associations were formed in Canada and the United States. Eventually, these western rodeo associations would join to form the WIREA.
WIREA events stand out in many ways; the Native people who produce the rodeos put importance on integrating children and community events as well as outstanding respect for the animals involved.
The Lillooet Lake Rodeo is centred around the community, so to kickoff the weekend there's a parade! You can join the parade from Rancheree to Ull'us at 11 am and ten head to the Fun Rodeo at 1 pm on Saturday, May 19th. This is fun for everyone; bring the entire family along and join in!
