Where to Stay Near Joffre Lakes

CHECK AVAILABILITY

A Month-by-Month Guide

Joffre Lakes Park/Pipi7íyekw is one of the most photographed places in British Columbia, and one of the hardest to do casually. Passes are released two days ahead. The parking lot fills before most people have left the city. And the drive from Vancouver is two and a half hours before you’ve taken a single step uphill.

Staying the night before solves most of that. Pemberton Valley Lodge is a 30-minute drive from the trailhead, close enough to be parked and hiking while the day-trippers are still driving up the Sea to Sky.

The Trail: 11 km return, about 4 hours, 360 m of elevation gain. Moderate to difficult.

From The Lodge: 30 minutes east on Highway 99 over Duffey Lake Road.

From Vancouver: 2.5 hours.

From Kamloops: 3 hours.

Why the night before makes the difference

Three things about Joffre reward an early start, and all three are easier from 30 minutes away.

The lot fills. Parking at the trailhead is limited, and roadside parking along the Duffey is enforced. Arriving late can mean turning around and driving home. A 7 a.m. departure from Pemberton is a comfortable morning. A 7 a.m. arrival from Vancouver means leaving at 4:30.

The light is better early. The lakes take their colour from glacial silt, and they read best in flat morning light before the crowds reach Upper Joffre.

There’s no cell service in the park. Whatever you need to sort out, a pass on your phone, directions, a weather check, sort it out before you leave. It’s a lot less stressful from a kitchen table than a gravel pullout.

Every suite at the lodge has a kitchen, which matters more here than it sounds. Our breakfast service starts at 7:30 a.m., and on a Joffre morning you’ll want to be gone before that. Make your own coffee, eat at your own hour, and pack lunch the night before.

Joffre Lake Day-use passes

A free day-use pass is required to hike Joffre Lakes from 11 May to 25 October 2026. Passes are released on the BC Parks reservation site at 7 a.m. Pacific time, two days before your visit, and they go quickly on summer weekends.

Two things worth knowing:

Set an alarm for 6:55 a.m. on the release morning. This is the single most common reason people arrive and can’t hike.

If you’ve reserved a site at the Upper Joffre Lake campground, you don’t need a separate day-use pass.

Outside those dates, no pass is needed, but the road, the trail and the daylight all become the limiting factor instead.

When the park is closed

Joffre Lakes Park/Pipi7íyekw is closed to the public 20–27 June and 8–30 September 2026.

These closures give the Líl̓wat Nation and N’Quatqua dedicated time in the park, the June dates for National Indigenous Peoples Day and the summer solstice, the September dates for fall harvesting and the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. The park sits in their territory, and the closures are part of how it’s managed.

If your trip falls in one of those windows, you haven’t lost your hiking. September in particular is one of the best months in the valley, quieter trails, and cooler air. Nairn Falls is a 5-minute drive from the lodge and takes about an hour. The lakes around Pemberton are warm well into the month and almost empty once school starts. And there’s a full list of hikes close to town if you want the elevation without the drive.

Getting to the Joffre Lakes Trailhead

From the lodge, head east on Highway 99 toward Lillooet. The trailhead is signed on the right, about 30 minutes on, just past the Cayoosh Creek bridges. It’s a mountain highway, winding, no shoulder in places, and wildlife on it at dawn.

Check conditions before you go, especially in shoulder season. Our Pemberton weather and highway webcams page pulls the live DriveBC cameras for the corridor, including the Duffey. If you’re arriving from the coast, getting to Pemberton has the routes and drive times.

Dogs can't come to Joffre Lakes

Worth knowing before you load the car: dogs have been prohibited in Joffre Lakes Park since 2018, and the ban is indefinite. It isn’t seasonal, and it isn’t enforced loosely.

The lodge is dog-friendly, so plenty of guests arrive with one and hike somewhere else. Nairn Falls, the valley trails and most of the lakes are all dog-friendly, and we’ve put together things to do in Pemberton with a dog for exactly this.

Hike Joffre Lakes Winter

Joffre in Winter

The trail stays open through winter, and the frozen lakes are genuinely worth seeing, but it becomes a different hike. Microspikes or snowshoes, avalanche awareness above the second lake, and far less daylight to work with. No pass is required outside the May–October window.

Our guide to hiking Joffre Lakes covers the winter route in more detail, and there’s more to do in the valley in winter than most visitors expect.

Where You'll Sleep

Pemberton Valley Lodge is an all-suite hotel in the centre of Pemberton, 30 minutes from the Joffre trailhead and 25 minutes north of Whistler.

Studio suites sleep two, with an efficiency kitchen.

One-bedroom suites sleep four, with a full kitchen and a balcony.

Two-bedroom suites sleep six — the usual choice for two couples or a family splitting a hiking weekend.

After the descent there’s a heated outdoor pool and hot tub, open year-round until 11 p.m., with adults-only swim after 9. Café YPS is off the lobby and serves until 9 p.m., so a late finish on the trail doesn’t mean going back out for dinner. Parking is covered and underground, which matters more than you’d think in February.
